Creagh tight-lipped on Red V song leader

Ben Creagh’sfirst item of business as Dragons’ captain isn’t likely to impact what transpires on a football field.

For the past seven years, Creagh, who on Wednesday took the reins from Ben Hornby as team skipper, has held custodianship of the Dragons’ team song in victory. He received the honour from Lance Thompson in 2006, who in turn had it passed on to him.

But, given the fact it’s uncustomary in most sports for a captain to lead the team chant – in the Dragons’ case, When The Saints Go Marching In – Creagh is poised to bestow the honour on someone else.

“I’ve been thinking about this, whether I hand it over to someone, but I’m not sure if I’m ready to hand it over yet,” he joked.

“I figure I probably should. I’ve got a couple of blokes in mind that might be good at the job.”

Creagh kept those candidates to himself when speaking to the Mercury this week, but online bookmaker sportsbet南京夜网.au believes it could be Trent Merrin.

Merrin, prop Dan Hunt and five-eighth Jamie Soward were among the shortest odds for the role when the market was framed yesterday.

“Forwards never get the plum gigs but, given that this job isn’t on TV, we reckon Trent Merrin and Dan Hunt are right in contention, so we’ve got them at the top of the betting,” sportsbet南京夜网.au’s Ben Hawes said.

“One thing is for certain though and that is that we will be monitoring the betting on Daniel Vidot very closely, given we recently saw his love of singing via YouTube!”

Whoever the next song leader is, Creagh believes he will take some refining before he can match his own sultry tones.

“It was a bit of a daunting task at first but I enjoy doing it now,” Creagh said. “I’ve been thinking about it during the week but I’ll keep the candidate close to my chest for now. I don’t think they’re going to be too happy about it though. We’ll see.”
