ABOUT 130 people have had the chance to question Brindabella representatives about the airline’s new Moree to Sydney service.
A public meeting was held at Moree’s Max Centre on Wednesday night after the council and community voiced concerns about Brindabella winning a newfive-year contract for the Sydney route, ending Qantas’ 21-year association.
Moree Plains Shire Council mayor Katrina Humphries said there were a lot of questions, with one of the major concerns being the proposed schedule.
Brindabella will run 36 services a week between Moree and Sydney, up from the current 20 servicessupplied by Qantas.
However, some believe the timing of the morning service from Moree – 9am – won’t leave people with enough time to do everything they need to in the city before they have to get back to the airport for a4.15pm return flight.
“It will force people to stay overnight … and many simply can’t afford that,” Cr Humphries said.
Brindabella commercial manager James Blake said yesterday the airline had listened to that feedback.
“We’re looking at options,” he said.
“We want them to benefit as much as possible.”
He added, though, Brindabella would never be able to make everyone happy.
Cr Humphries said the community still had reservations about Brindabella’s commitment to the area after it ended its Moree to Brisbane service a year ago, but Mr Blake said the two services could not be compared.
“Moree to Brisbane is a marginal route,” he said.
“It’s not one of the 14 regulated routes (as the Moree to Sydney one is) … and we’re the third airline to exit that route – it got down to basic economics.”
Mr Blake said the Sydney route was entirely different, with up to 27,000 passengers a year and growthexpected.
“It wouldn’t make sense for us to pull out of that,” he said.
“Very positive” was how Mr Blake described the meeting, but Cr Humphries didn’t feel the same.
“I’m looking for reassurances but I’m just not getting them,” she said.
Those at the meeting, she said, had been urged to send their concerns to the minister for transport, Opposition spokesman and local members of Parliament.
