FORMER Mildura boxer Matt Walker is making his presence felt in the South Australian circuit after winning the Amateur State Championship.
The 23-year-old won the 69kg Intermediate Division on Sunday, defeating fellow Adelaide fighter Owen Helms to be crowned the winner.
Mildura youngsters Laurence Casale and Connor Tyson also tasted success at the championships, winning the 50kg Open Boys and 60kg Schoolboy Novice titles, respectively.
After defeating the previously unbeaten Mario Villalta on his way to the title fight, Walker took the points in a hard-fought contest
He put his opponent on the canvas in the final of three rounds to inflict a standing eight count to be assured the title in an impressive performance.
Now living in Adelaide, Walker turned his full attention to the combat sport after playing football.
“I started boxing in Mildura but I moved out here and got involved with some proper gyms,” he said.
“I only played one year of footy (in Adelaide) before turning my attention to boxing.
“It’s all been good so far.”
Walker said he was a bit nervous going into the weekend, especially against Villalta, who had won five straight bouts, but said he felt his form was strong going into the competition.
Walker said he hoped to step up into Open Division next year.
For the Mildura juniors, Casale took his section’s victory in style, moving up from his original 50kg Schoolboy Novice class.
As the local boxer was unable to be matched in his original division, he was offered a walk through to the title with a consolation bout against a lighter opponent of 43kg.
