ROCHESTER coach Peter White says the signing this week of superboot Grant Weeks has created not only a buzz at the club, but throughout the town.
The Tigers pulled off a massive recruiting coup at the weekend when they secured Weeks – country Victoria’s premier full-forward – from Golden Square.
Weeks has been a goalkicking machine in the Bendigo Football League for the past three seasons with the Bulldogs, booting 451 goals in 59 games, including a league record 164 this year.
However, despite having committed to Golden Square next year, Weeks is now headed to the Tigers to play in the Goulburn Valley Football League.
“It has certainly sent a buzz throughout the group and the town… it’s not every day a player of that quality walks into your club,” White said yesterday.
“So we’re very excited to have him on board and looking forward to the future.
“He wanted to play with a few of his mates and test himself at another standard, and I’ve got no doubt he’ll do that with ease.
“He’s going to be great for the club.”
In his three years at Golden Square, Weeks kicked 157, 130 and 164 goals, which included 18 double figure bags.
He kicked at least 10 goals in a game against every club, with his best being 21 against Kyneton in round 15 this year.
Rochester finished second on the GVFL ladder this year, winning 14 of its 18 home and away games, but was bundled out of the finals in straight sets.
The Tigers will possess one of the GVFL’s most dangerous forward lines next year.
As well as Weeks, the Tigers also have Elliott Bowen, who finished second on the GVFL goalkicking this year with 76, while they have also secured Luke Gestier, who kicked 60 goals for Deer Park this year.
Plus, dangerous small forward Dylan Cuttriss is returning to the club after a two-year stint with Colbinabbin in the Heathcote District Football League.
Joining Weeks at Rochester will be fellow BFL recruits Brayden Dorrington and Callum Sharp (Golden Square) and Daniel Anderson (South Bendigo).
