The woman was injured on Cowper Street about 9.20am yesterday.

A 40-year-old man was later taken into custody, and was last night assisting police with their inquiries.

Lake Illawarra police Inspector Steve Johnson said the woman was hit as the car, a Toyota Corolla, reversed.

“Police will allege that the driver failed to stop and render assistance. The vehicle involved was located a short time later in Todd Street, Warrawong, where a fire had been set inside the vehicle,” he said.

Fire and Rescue NSW extinguished the fire.

The woman, who lives in Port Kembla, suffered head injuries and was taken to Wollongong Hospital in a serious condition, a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.

According to police she had emergency surgery. Last night her condition was critical.

Anyone who saw the incident or has further information can contact Lake Illawarra police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
